Mayors For Peace
Home > Issues > Mayors For Peace

In 1982, then Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this program. Mayors for Peace is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of February 1, 2010, membership stood at 3,562 cities in 134 countries and regions.

Here in the North Suburbs, we are working to get all our mayors to join this effort. Three cities in our area have already joined - Chicago, Evanston, and Schaumburg - but that leaves over 100 other cities and towns within the area. We believe building a broad base of support for the abolition of nuclear weapons is the way we will finally put an end to these dread weapons - join us in building that base in your community.
